I will never forget this one Sunday morning when a group of us met at TJ’s
for breakfast before driving out to a pole barn to bench press.

Somebody said something about a PR, and I just blew it off. I had no idea
what it meant. Later, while training the bench, I heard a few others say
the same thing, so I asked Matt Dimell, “What the hell is a PR?” He looked
at me like I was an idiot and told me it’s a “personal record.”

I had no idea why this even mattered. To me, the meet records were Personal
Records, and all the rest was just training. I learned to embrace this as I
became more familiar with the max effort method but never really understood
the need for hundreds of PRs. I only knew a handful of my best lifts and
had to ask Louie with almost every max effort lift what my best was.
Thankfully, he always knew.

                Now it seems we all have PRs for everything.

PR training sets of 20, 15, 12, 10, 8, 5, 3, 2, and singles. PR food
consumption, PR body weight, PR body fat, PR bodyweight movements, PR
training tempo, PR fecal matter, PR sticks of chewing gum, PR steps per
day, PR number of people we can piss off each day…

I suppose we measure everything and forget that most of this is simply part
of the lifestyle associated with what we do. Do we need this many records
for things we should be doing to the best of our ability anyhow?

I’m done!

I will no longer stamp “PR” on things I SHOULD be doing. I’m going back to
only counting the stuff that REALLY matters.

I’ll call them MFPRs.
